Bringing technology into the community
It takes one to help one
During the Career Day at Northern Trust, Prosser Career Academy students learned about video conferencing over IP, project management, servers, storage and management, databases, networking, as well as security and how the internet works. They also had an exclusive tour of Northern Trust’s data center. One of the participants, Jose Radilla, shared his reaction to the tour: “I was most amazed that there are people in higher level positions that were willing to teach us and spend that much time and effort with us.”
Lumity and Prosser Career Academy have partnered over the past two years to train local community residents on how to use Microsoft programs. Ken Robinson, vice president of worldwide operations and technology at Northern Trust was inspired to enroll in Community Corps after hearing a TEDx talk performed by Lumity’s Executive Director, Kara Kennedy while attending Lumity’s Annual Fundraising Dinner. After enrolling in the technology matching portal, Ken was matched with Prosser Career Academy for a mentoring project.
“I was amazed by the students’ energy and enthusiasm for technology so I wanted to invite the students to Northern Trust to introduce them to the possibilities of an IT career” says Ken. “I also encouraged the students to give back to their community — it doesn’t take much and it’s very rewarding.”
Lumity and Prosser Career Academy are appreciative of the following professionals who took the time to create a vision of IT career possibilities for these students:
