Case Study 2Organization Served by Lumity: Snow City Arts Foundation
Community Impact: Academic Credit for Arts Education for Hospitalized Children
Snow City Arts Foundation teaches art workshops to some of the 40,000 hospitalized children in Chicago. Young patients can take part in workshops on creative writing, music, painting, photography, and filmmaking seven days a week as they cultivate their skills. Since these children regularly miss school because of their need for treatment, Snow City also works with the Chicago Public schools to gain academic credit for their work.
Need: Getting academic credit for the children’s efforts was hampered by the fact that Snow City’s students often spend time in multiple health facilities, working with multiple artists. The organization was spending an increasing amount time on administrative tasks instead of providing educational and creative services for sick children.
Outcome: Snow City and Lumity staff implemented a database system to track both the patient histories and creative works of hospitalized children that enables staff to spend more time with students as well as capturing academic credit details for students’ records. Snow City Staff now spend 20% less time on administrative tasks and more time providing workshops, and students gain more academic credit for their creative work.
